NIGERIA EVANGELICAL MISSIONARY INSTITUTE (NEMI)

Nigeria Evangelical Missionary Institute (NEMI)

The National Training Centre for All Nations
Raising Kingdom Advocates as agent of Transformation among the Nations since 1986

A bit of history
NEMI was founded as a result of the vision of late Bill O’Donovan, an SIM missionary, who saw the need for the specialized training of Nigerian missionaries. While he was teaching in a Bible school he met many well-qualified Nigerian Christians with a strong sense of God’s call to be missionaries. They did not know where to get cross-cultural training without going to Britain or the United States. In 1982 nine missions formed the Nigeria Evangelical Missions Association (NEMA). Two years later, at the suggestion of O’Donovan they decided to organize a training school for Nigerian missionaries as a cooperative venture. NEMI operation commenced fully in 1986 and till date has been committed to cross-cultural training of prospective missionaries for frontier missions.

Purpose of NEMI
The purpose of NEMI is to provide practical training in cross-cultural ministry skills to people (especially Africans) called of God and committed to cross-cultural missionary work. NEMI’s training is not geared toward giving paper qualifications to students, but toward making them effective field missionaries.

What We Do
Basically we exist to;
1.       Provide practical cross-cultural missionary training to all called of God to serve among the unreached tribes and peoples of the world. Regionally, our focus for training missionaries is Northern Nigeria, North Africa, Arabian Peninsula, Horn of Africa and Jerusalem Neighborhood – Vision 5015 nations.
2.       Empower NEMA member institutions, serving missionaries, Christian Professionals, etc, through the training of trainers (TOT) and other short-term mission seminars.
Note:
1.        Vision 5015 is the Nigeria church’s goal to mobilize 50,000 Nigerians for missions and to Train; Send; and Support 15,000 of them to some 34 intervening countries between Nigeria and Israel in 15 years (2005 – 2020).
2.        TOT means training of trainers. It started in NEMI in 2005 through the effort of Timothy Olonade, NEMA pioneer executive secretary. It is a good refresher course that helps ministry leaders and trainers of mission training institutes to reflect on their work and walk with God. Those who enroll in our TOT shall receive training materials that will be useful for training others.

OUR TRAINING PHILOSOPHY
NEMI trains the whole person – mind, soul and body academically and cross-culturally. We impart knowledge through teaching, character through modeling and example, and skill through guided experience. This ensures that our trainees have a firm grasp of God’s global purpose through relevant classroom instructions, one-on-one discipleship sessions, flock group meetings, family evenings, chapel services, and practical mission field experiences. Well-prepared missionaries need knowledge and skills, but research has shown that character and the personal spirituality of the field missionary is critical to fruitful success. Therefore, NEMI training is geared towards three-part curriculum as follows:

Three-part Curriculum
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

GENERAL QUALIFICATION
For (1), (2), and (3) above those who apply must be:
1.       Matured Christians with a sense of call to mission. Those who do not have a sense of call to mission may also enroll if they have a desire to know how to play their role well in God’s global purpose.
2.       Recommended by a church or mission agency. However, Independent candidates who pass our interview may also be considered;
3.       At least a Senior Secondary School leaving Certificate holder,
4.       Able to speak, read and write in English.
Note:
1.        Those who read and speak only Hausa can also apply. Such candidates will spend the first 6 months learning English language before taking missiological courses.
2.        Some people have the erroneous belief that theological and missiological studies are synonymous. While there is an overlap in the two, there is more to cross-cultural ministry not available in theological studies. So, a diploma or BA degree in theology is a good foundation for an effective missionary training.
