Nigeria
Evangelical Missionary Institute (NEMI) in Conjunction with Tentmakers
International Present;
Cross-Cultural
Training for Christian Professionals (Tentmakers)!
Tent makers’
Model … opening Missions up to the whole Body of Christ, not just Professional Missionaries.
“After this, he left from Athens and went to
Corinth, where he found a Jewish man named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had
recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered
all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul came to them, and being of the same occupation,
stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers
by trade.”
(Acts 18:1-3, Emphasis mine) HCSB
What is Tent Making?
Tent making is often used to describe individual
Christians who find employment in a cross-cultural context, taking jobs in
schools, hospitals or businesses, etc. It is not a business-specific term. It
obviously is a reference to the Apostle Paul, who was by trade, a tent-maker. A
careful study of his letters reveals that working was not a “necessary evil”
for Paul, or a “cover,” but rather was an essential part of his missionary
strategy for several reasons. By working for a living, Paul set a pattern of
lay witness and ministry by regular, working Christians.
Who is a Tentmaker?
Tentmakers
are persons who use their skills to make enough money to finance their ministry
and then minister “on the side.” This is a very good and effective model. In
fact, it is the only model possible in some places in the world. There are
countries in the world today that are closed to traditional missionaries;
however a medical doctor or an engineer or even an English teacher might be
able to go in, get a job, and be paid a very livable wage.
The Challenge!
Look
at your skills, your training and your interests and see if there may not be opportunities
for you to go somewhere in the world and make a living while serving Jesus at
the same time. Often this cannot be done effectively without some sort of
cross-cultural training.

“I believe one of the next great moves of God is
going to be through the believers in the workplace,” -Billy Graham.
“I believe
the workplace movement has the potential to impact society as much as the
reformation did. I have read 64 books on this movement and have 54 pages of
handwritten notes. It is what the Spirit is saying to the churches today.” -
Peter Wagner
